What is Premium Custom Lens Replacement?
Premium Custom Lens Replacement, also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), Clear Lens Replacement (CLR), or Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), is a precise surgical procedure that replaces the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL). Unlike LASIK, which reshapes the cornea, RLE replaces the lens to correct conditions such as extreme long-sightedness, short-sightedness, or presbyopia (blurred near vision due to lens hardening with age). This procedure is similar to cataract surgery and offers an alternative to laser vision correction.
The Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange Include:
- Quick Recovery: Enjoy a fast return to your daily activities.
- Versatile Vision: See clearly both near and far.
- Reduced Dependency: Significant decrease in reliance on corrective lenses.
- Cataract Prevention: Eliminates the risk of developing cataracts in the future.
- Enhanced Vision: Experience improved visual clarity.
- Long-Lasting Solution: Provides a permanent correction that can last a lifetime.
Refractive Lens Exchange is Ideal for Patients Who:
- Want to reduce or eliminate their reliance on glasses or contact lenses
- Are over 45 years old
- Have myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), presbyopia (age-related blurry near vision), and/or astigmatism, with or without cataracts
- Exhibit early symptoms of cataracts
This procedure is often chosen by those who are not suitable candidates for LASIK due to extreme refractive errors and seek alternative vision correction. Refractive Lens Exchange is performed on an outpatient basis using techniques similar to cataract surgery, with the aim of replacing the natural lens with a corrective lens to minimize the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Premium Custom Lens Replacement Procedure
- Before the procedure, your ophthalmologist will sterilize your eye and use aesthetic eye drops to numb it. The surgeon will then make a small incision to access the natural lens. A laser is often used to gently create openings, soften the dysfunctional lens, and treat any astigmatism. Once the lens is removed, it is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL).
- There are three main types of IOLs:
- Extended Depth of Focus IOLs: These lenses provide a continuous focus from distance to intermediate tasks, such as reading from a computer or smartphone. They offer a good balance of vision quality for intermediate and some near tasks. Occasionally, low-power reading glasses may be needed for very small print or low-light conditions.
- Multifocal IOLs: These work like bifocal glasses, with different zones of the lens designed for distance and close-range vision. The peripheral part of the lens allows for clarity in near tasks, while the center maintains clear distance vision.
- Monovision IOLs: This approach uses different lenses for each eye—one for distance vision and the other for near vision. The brain adapts over time to use each eye for specific tasks, similar to monovision contact lenses.
