Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma is a progressive disease that causes damage to the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain and is associated with eye pressure.

The optic nerve consists of numerous nerve fibers, and damage to these fibers can result in blind spots and peripheral vision loss.

It is an irreversible condition. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often slow the progression of the damage and protect your vision.

What are the Treatments for Glaucoma?

The main goal of treatment is to prevent further optic nerve damage by lowering eye pressure. Treatment options vary based on the disease’s stage and the patient’s suitability for specific treatments. The primary treatment categories include:

Prescription Eye Drops

First-line treatment to reduce intraocular pressure by either increasing the drainage of aqueous humor or decreasing its production.

Laser Therapy

Recommended to improve fluid drainage and lower intraocular pressure. Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI): Used to enhance fluid drainage within the eye.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
Small incisions and tiny drainage implants are often performed with cataract surgery. To enhance outflow of aqueous humour or create alternative drainage pathways to reduce intraocular pressure and slow glaucoma progression.
Trabeculectomy Surgery

Considered when medications and laser therapy are insufficient, creating alternative pathways for fluid drainage.

Lifestyle Modifications
Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and managing conditions like diabetes and hypertension can contribute to overall eye health and reduce the risk of glaucoma progression.
