Floaters

What is Floaters?

A visual obstruction that moves with the movement of the eye.

Eye floaters looks like dots, hairs, lines , strings often drifting as you move your eyes.

They are most noticeable when looking at something bright or plain, such as a blue sky, blank computer screen or a white wall.

They are usually caused by age-related changes in the vitreous, the jelly-like substance inside your eyes, which contracts and forms clumps of collagen that cast shadows on the retina.

What are the Risk Factors?

  • Age over 50
  • Near-sightedness
  • Eye injury
  • Complications from cataract surgery
  • Diabetes (diabetic retinopathy)
  • Eye inflammation (intraocular)
  • Retinal tear
  • Retinal detachment
  • Intraocular inflammation
  • Vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding behind eye)
  • Previous cataract surgery can increase the perception of floaters.

What is The Treatment?

Generally, longstanding and unchanging floaters are harmless.
No treatment required.

However, it’s important to have an eye exam when symptoms begin and another follow-up exam within four to six weeks to check for complications.

During follow-up exams, your eye care provider will ensure nothing was missed during the initial diagnosis and check for potential complications, such as retinal tears, which may develop later.

A sudden onset of floaters can be caused by a very serious eye problem and needs urgent attention, ideally within 24 hours.
